Abstract

In urethane-anesthetized rabbits, intravenous 5-HT preceded by intravenous sympathomimetic amines produced ectopic beats. No intimate relationship was found between incidence of arrhythmia and the reflexive cardiac slowing produced by 5-HT. This suggested a direct action of 5-HT on heart to produce the ectopic beats.
Intravenous or intraventricular quinidine did not prevent the arrhythmia produced by combined actions of 5-HT and sympathomimetic amines, but exacerbate it in some instances. Quinidine produced a transitory depressor response in normal anesthetized rabbits, whereas it produced pressor response preceded by depression in reserpine-treated rabbits. This suggested some pharmacologic actions of quinidine might be related to sympathetic activity.
